Relocation
Resources
Whether you're a newcomer, visitor or resident of Phoenix,
knowing where to find help with things such as schools,
child care, voter registration, utilities, homes or apartments
makes the difference.
Automobiles
New residents must register vehicles and obtain an
Arizona drivers license upon establishing residency,
accepting employment, enrolling children in public school
or remaining in Arizona for an aggregate of seven months or
more during a calendar year.
Driver's License
The minimum age is 16; learners permits are available
at age 15 years, seven months. Licenses expire on your 60th
birthday if you are under 50 years of age when the license
is issued. People who obtain their license at 50 years of
age and older must have it renewed every five years. Residents
can now renew by phone at (888) 713-3031. For hours of operation
and locations, call (602) 255-0072 or visit www.dot.state.az.us.
Emissions Testing
In Maricopa County, all vehicles made since 1967 must pass
emissions testing before being registered. The fee is $12.50
for vehicles made from 1967 to 1980, and they must be tested
every year. Vehicles made since 1981 are tested every other
year, with a fee of $25. For locations, hours and other information,
call the Vehicle Emissions Hotline, (602) 470-4646 or visit
www.adeq.state.az.us/environ/air/vei/index.html.
Motor Vehicle Registration
There is a site
made just for people new to Arizona.
For first-time motor vehicle registration in Arizona,
you must take your vehicle, along with the title from your
previous state of residence, current registration, license
plates and a completed emissions test, to one of the offices
of the Maricopa County Auto License Department. Liability
insurance is required. A vehicle license tax is based on the
month and year the vehicle is first registered and its factory
list price. The vehicle license tax must be paid at the time
of registration along with a registration fee. You will receive
a rear license plate that remains with your vehicle as long
as it is registered in Arizona. Your registration will expire
annually on the last day of the month in which you originally
registered. Registration can be renewed on the Internet at
www.servicearizona.com.
For office hours and locations, call the Maricopa
County Auto License Department, (602) 255-0072. Or head to
